Over the course of history, the definition of "queer" has changed. It started out as a normal dictionary word used to describe something odd, peculiar, or eccentric. In the 80s it became a slur toward homosexuals and since has been mostly considered a derogatory term.
However, recently within the last 10 years, the LGBTQ+ community has reclaimed the term "queer" as a more positive label/term. Personally I am happy about it. I've seen it used in usernames, blog posts, tumblrs, Facebook and YouTube.
I use the term "queer" as my label because I don't feel like the common LGBTQ+ terms fit me. Queer, although an umbrella term, still makes me feel like I have a label for myself and makes me feel like I'm a part of the community.
I really don't feel like we need labels. I'd rather just be me, but society likes to compartmentalize. We need boxes to feel complete. The idea of the undefined can make people nervous. Just remember that all you really need is to be yourself and labels don't mean a thing!
